We Preserve Mecklenburg

Excelsior Club

The Excelsor Club opened in 1944 and became a major social gathering place for African Americans during the racial segregation era.  This building is an icon.  It was central to the struggle for African Americans for the fruits of full citizenship in Charlotte-Mecklenburg.  The building is under immediate threat and is scheduled for demolition in June 2019.  Its preservation would be a great victory for the celebration and appreciation of diversity in this community.  Its loss would truly be crippling to many in the African American community.
