The Standard Oil Service Station on North Tryon Street is a unique historic artifact in the built environment of Charlotte-Mecklenburg. The property is for sale. Because the station is a designated historic landmark, some might think that it cannot be demolished. State law allows the owner to demolish the property after a one-year wait. Perhaps the proposed private preservation group can work with the Historic Landmarks Commission to assure the preservation of the station, which could be a vital stimulus to a rebranding of this portion of North Tryon Street.
